Mono, Dorothy?

Glenn Gould session

I was thinking about the point in the film, The Wizard of Oz, when Dorothy finds herself “not in Kansas anymore.”  The film conveys the magic by switching from black and white to colour at that point.  A similar transition happened when the audio world moved from mono to stereo recordings, and again from stereo to surround recordings.

Recently, I felt a similar gestalt shift when recording score with an orchestra at the CBC instead of the usual sample libraries and synthesizers.  You think you’re seeing the whole picture and then, BAM, you’re standing in technicolour OZ!

Mixing Tripmeter

November 26th, 2009 by Douglas Romanow

There’s a GREAT band coming out of Saskatchewan called Tripmeter.  I met them first at the 2009 Western Canadian Music Awards showcase.  Then again out in Calgary at the GMACs.   I’m working on a radio single with them now [see the Detailer/Projects page for a clip].  Their music is adventurous, musical, mysterious.  The live show is a work of art.  Their star is rising.

Website Fun

November 24th, 2009 by Douglas Romanow

I’m amazed at how easy and complex it is to launch a website.  This one was built using WordPress, which is a relatively inexpensive utility.  There are great options available in a ‘power to the people’ kind of way.  The easiest part, of course, was handing all the design duties off to Nick Perreault  www.nikabrik.com.  He’s had some significant programming help from Rod Miles at www.onegreypaw.com.  Thanks, guys!
