Douglas Romanow has been professionally composing music for over 20 years, both for non-profit and corporate clients. He works easily in many genres, and his credits include scores for a Nokia cell phone commercial and a Christian arts and justice festival trailer.

“When I was a kid, if the movie was good, I would get completely caught up in it.  I’d forget where I was and see only the world on the screen.  I was the kid who guffawed, got freaked out, sometimes even cried—which made my friends laugh.  Now I’m a dad, and it’s my kids who laugh at me, because I still have all those strong reactions.

As a composer, I interpret scenes as if I’m looking through emotional windows, looking for cues from the storyline as to what the audience needs to feel at each moment. I pay attention to the subtleties of each scene—characterization, pacing, beats—in order to write music that supports the intention of the scene, and hopefully adds another layer of beauty and meaning.

Composers need to protect their emotional sensitivity. Awareness of emotional nuance is one of a composer’s greatest assets.”
